January 2010 HR Highlights

Economic Overview

The unemployment rate has fallen to 4.9 per cent, its lowest level since January of last year, with the most noticeable decrease seen among people aged between 15 and 24. The jobless rate has been steadily falling since hitting a peak of 5.4 per cent for the period of April to June last year. Decreases in the unemployment rate were mainly observed in the import/export trade and the financing and accommodation services sectors. The underemployment rate also declined from 2.5 per cent between September and November last year to 2.3 per cent between October and December. Among age groups, the most noticeable decrease in jobless rate was in the 15-19 and 20-24 age groups, falling by 1.5 percentage points to 20.1 per cent and 1 percentage point to 10.5 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s exports recorded a second month of year-on-year growth in December after a year in decline, and economists expect more of the same as long as the US and European markets continue to strengthen. Total exports reached HK$224.8 billion last month, up 9.2 per cent from December 2008, according to Census and Statistics Department figures released yesterday. It was the second consecutive month of growth after total exports rose 1.3 per cent year-on-year in November. A government spokesman said intraregional trade underpinned the rise in exports last month, and US and European markets were improving slowly. [Source: SCMP (B1)/ HKEJ (P1), 27 Jan 10]

On the other hand, Hong Kong’s inflation rate jumped to 1.3 per cent last month, and consumer prices are expected to climb further as the economy recovers. The year-on-year consumer price index climbed 0.8 percentage point from November, according to data from Census and Statistics Department. Netting out the effects of the government’s relief measures, such as a concession on rates, the underlying inflation rate rose for the first time in five months, by 0.3 per cent. The government attributed the rise to increases in food prices, fees for package tours and motor fuel prices. A government spokesman said this indicates that deflationary pressures have by and large receded as the economy continues to recover. [Source: SCMP (A3)/ HKEJ (P4), 21 Jan 10]
